Just found this – a story from way back – put there are some good bits in it.
such as when a red flag should be put up : “You take into account a variety of things: you listen to the weather reports and forecasts; you assess the strength of the wind blowing the flags on top of the seafront hotels; and then there’s the most important consideration of all, which is whether or not I would let my Nan swim in those conditions.” – Garry Cairns

Patrol Day Success September 3, 2007

Last Saturday (24th August) members of the club young and old came together to provide lifeguard cover between Splash Point (Redoudt Fortress) to Eastbourne Pier. The day was a complete success with 15 members turning out throughout the day to carry out foot patrols, boat patrols, observation posts and even some board patrols. With one minor first aid incident dealt with I am sure our presence alone safeguarded many that swam in the sea on the day. Remember, a good lifeguard will identify a potential incident before it actually happens……ooh that must be us, what a team!

We finished the day off back at the clubhouse with a fund-raising evening amongst club members and their families by having a BBQ and raffle. The club raised over £50 which is fantastic and I actually won a raffle prize!
Thanks to everybody that volunteered their time throughout the day, evening (setting up/down), donations (prizes/monetary/equipment etc) and parents who came to support us (and not to forget our mackerel friends who joined us for a ‘bite’ to eat).

Maritime Day July 29, 2007

Thanks to everyone that helped out (too many to name individually) on the Eastbourne Maritime 2km swim organised by Eastbourne Swimming club. Particularly to Frank Patterson and Lee Bailey that organised the safety cover and getting all the equipment down to the beach. Thank you to Garry Cairns and his team from the Eastbourne Beach Lifeguards that provided extra cover and made a number of rescues and assists them selves.
The weather turned out ok – the wind turned north easterly, there was a bit of a swell but no chop to the swimming conditions were good. There were 97 competitors, the majority got round fine, four people needed to be rescued – but all were fine.
After the event a few Eastbourne Voluntary members and there families stayed on the beach enjoying the increasing sunshine (that was a long time coming) – some of the member also got a chance to ride in the boat too.

Call for help at the Maritime Swim! July 8, 2007

Hi everyone! Just a quick request for Beach Lifeguard Qualified members and Bronze medallion holders for the Maritime Swim that will be held on Sunday the 29th of July. We will need as many board competent lifeguards as we can get.
We plan to make a day of it – with a few patrols – in coordination with the beach lifeguards from 10am – 4pm.
We would like to invite any members and their families down to the Wish Tower beach from 10:30am – the swim is worth watching, plus we will try to (depending on how many people we have) organise some Lifeguarding / educational activities (but can’t provide supervision – hence our invite for the families). The swim itself is at 11:30am.
During the 2km swim we will provide cover from the beach, on the boards and using the boat. The swim activities will be from 11am through to 1pm.
If you are interested, the Maritime swim briefing will be at 18:00 on the 23rd of July at the clubhouse. You can leave a comment below – Lee will get an email (we won’t publish it – if you don’t want to).
Jack and James’ Course Part 1 June 17, 2007

Well done once again to the candidates on the most recent course. This time the group have been split up in to two. Jacquie, Jono, Rich and I passed the NaRS on Sunday. This also means that Jack and James are now full Instructors. Keith and Garry examined with Kirk overseeing the exam. This was also Keith’s final exam as a probationary examiner – which makes him a full examiner.
Another Surf Course… June 10, 2007

Yes… yet another I know…
But slightly different this time – Garry ran this course, his first. Of course he has been training lifeguards for a very long time now – but this was his first Surf NaRS course… Matt H, Matt A and Barry S all did very well passing with a very high standard. Keith and my self examined and Danny Bryant from SLS GB once again came all the way from the west coast to oversee the examination. Thanks to Lionel for water safety and to Jack’s and James’ course for providing bodies.
(Thanks Bob for correcting the poor spelling)
