Hi all – again just a quick round up…  Firstly the thank you…   Last Sunday a load of members (ok I don’t have the list to hand yet…  but will do shortly) helped out at the annual Christmas car raffle at the Arndale Shopping center. A big thank you to all that turned up and particularly to Amanda for organizing everything.  We raised £790!!!  I also have a few pics that I will upload…On Sat 19th Jan at 11am Jaeger, Holly, April and Louisa will attend the official cheque presentation in the Arndale Centre.

Just returned from the seniors Christmas gathering…   lots of pizza – maybe too much…  only thing to report really is that Garry won the pink poodle…  enough said.

Tomorrow is the Juniors Club championships – good luck to all those competing – hope the judges are not too hard on you…

Finally Lionel dropped me a line with a few bits ad pieces…

Lionel will be doing a sponsored swim on the 17th January 2008 – if you can help Lionel’s cause in anyway just contact him (or leave a comment below) .  The swim will help Lionel raise money for a project where he will be helping set up a computer network in for a school in Freetown, Sierra Leone.  While the team are there they will also be taking part in a celebration of the abolition of slavery. More information can be found on the BBC site.

Well it has been a while since I last posted some thing – but that doesn’t mean that nothing has been going on! Here is a quick summary rather than just avoiding writing loads of separate entries…

Firstly – a quick call to arms.. At Christmas time each year we get a chance to raise a bit of money by selling raffle tickets at the Arndale Centre. This year it will be the 9th of December from 10:30am – 4:30pm so if you can help out there is a form you can fill out at the clubhouse – or let someone know on Thursday swim night. Even if you can just be there for a couple of hours that would be great! If you not a member or would like to find out about membership that would be a good day to drop by – we will be the lot standing next to a car in the Arndale centre & hopefully a few of us will be wearing red & yellow too!

Well Victoria – I have seen your comments – well done to you, Chris, Toby and Jake on your exam last month – there are now new photo’s in the gallery. Also thanks to the examiners Danny Bryant – SLSA, Garry Cairns – EVLG, Kirk – EVLG/Brighton and Stuart – Norfolk, water saftey and not forgetting well done to Jacquie on passing her instructors. Brighton’s new club also made an appearance with Paul Abbie, Simon Crute, Anthony Biddlecombe, Harry Walker & Paul Bass passing their NaRS and Susan passing her instructors.

Beach Lifeguard competition went well – Crawley fielded two teams (with the help of Lionel filling in a little). The competition was very close – coming down to one point between Crawley A and Eastbourne – Eastbourne just won this time – but the Crawley team shows strong promise for the future – Thank you to John Stanar for organising the competition & of course to the Judges, water safety & the bodies on the day – although I think we lost Kirk due to the strong tide – last seen drifting down towards Brighton – in fact I hear that he didn’t bother coming back and is now the club captain of the newly formed Brighton Surf Life Saving Club.

Also should mention two facebook groups Eastbourne Voluntaries and Surf Lifesaving GB

SLSA GB first conference was held last month – more details on the SLSA GB website

Ok so I could have written more & I bet I have forgotten things – you can help – leave a comment or two!

Application Wet Wet Wetter 3 for powerboat, vhf radio handlers, bronze medallion and first aid courses during October to March has been granted today by the Youth Opportunity Fund (ESCC).

£4990.15 has been awarded for club members between the age of 13 – 19 years to attend courses above. (more information to follow shortly)

I think Lionel was the main man with this one so a big pat on the back for you mate, but thanks to everyone that chipped in with help and support.

Yet again this is an unbelievable result bringing the total amount of funding secured by our junior members to £45,247.21 since Youth OpportunityFunding became available in April 2006, (£36,107.21 since April this year alone!!).

Well done.

Thanks again to our Junior section we have recieved confirmation that the Youth Opportunity Fund (ESCC) has awarded £21,365.06 for capital works to our clubhouse. This significant sum of money will provide a new roof, new rear shutter door, replacement flag pole, external display cabinet and flammable storage cabinet.

There are too many people to thank individually but you know who you are, all of you have contributed to this successful result. Inparticular thanks go to Kayleigh, Nick and Lionel (assissted by Natalie) who put together and presented to the panel of judges a presentation about the club (history and what we do) and what they would spend the money on. They were not alone as they competed against other applicants to score points on their overall presentation which they must have delivered really well otherwise we wouldn’t be celebrating! Well done guys.

Work/ordering will start as soon as possible with consideration being given to the clubs current usage expectations over the Autum, Winter and Spring.

To all members 13 to 19 years it’s time to get your skates on.

Deadline for the last round of funding via the YOF is October 1st so Lionel and the gang need your Ideas for activities/courses that can be carried out over evenings, weekends and holidays up to March 31st 2008.

Any ideas you may have can be posted on this site, alternatively there is a black board in the clubhouse to write your ideas down.

Applications must be for at least £500 up to £5000, so if you don’t ask you don’t get. Good luck

Again! I hear you say.

The young members of the club (13 – 19) applied to the Youth Capital Fund for a brand new boat, and on Wednesday evening I took a call advising that their application has been successfull and £5008.00 was coming the clubs way!

This application was not as straight forward as the previous ones and it required them to carry out a grueling five minute presentation about their application with five minutes of questions afterwards. East Sussex County Council said, “the application submitted was absolutely fantastic and outshone many entered, and as for their presentation, wow, it was so good. It was that good that they covered most of the questions that had been prepared which left the panel of judges in limbo and had to make up some questions to fill time. They thoroughly deserve the money”.

The plan is to buy the ‘Arancia’ boat which is purpose built for lifesaving and surf conditions (not that we get any!) and is considered the best boat in the world for it’s intended purpose. Pic of boat below..

Well done again guys!

Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards are the grateful recipients of funding supported by the East Sussex County Council Youth Opportunity Fund (ESCC YOF).

Members of the club (aged 13 – 19 years) completed funding applications to the ESCC panel of judges, who are all young people themselves.

Last summer the club was awarded funding for water sport activities at Spray Water Sports. This included courses in power boat handling, wind surfing, canoeing and sailing.

Last winter the club was successful with three additional applications. The first was for a youth project to refurbish the clubrooms. They are now transformed from a dated and dark facility to a modern, bright and inviting place with new furniture for all members to enjoy. The project included preparation, decoration and upholstery of furniture under the guidance of adult members.

The youngsters also successfully applied for an environmental project which has provided the club with a much needed new four stroke engine for the club rescue boat.

The fourth and final successful application was for new lifesaving equipment. This enabled the replacement of old items and has equipped the club with new uniforms, training and patrol wetsuits, handheld radios and lifesaving aids such as rescue boards, torpedo buoys and throw ropes.

In total the young members of the club have received £9,135.00 to date and they are now applying for further funding through the YOF, including giving a presentation to the panel on 18 June.

Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards Chairman Sean Gardiner said; “To be awarded four grants in 2006 is amazing, what a great achievement by our young members. On behalf of the club I would like to thank the YOF judges for awarding the funding to our club and we would also like to thank the young members of our club for their time, effort and commitment in successfully applying for all of this and future funding”.

Natalie, Nick and Lionel were ask to present on Monday by the decision board of the East Sussex County Council youth opportunity fund for their request of a grant for a replacement boat.  They gave a short talk about why they believed we needed a boat, and answered questions on the topic.  I am sure they did well.  They will be notified how they did by the board shortly.
