Hi all

Sussex Teams 19th April 2008

In this competition we had a total of two teams in which where Eastbourne A: James, April, Curtis and Louisa, also Eestbourne B: Lionel, Holly, Amy and Jono. The overall competitions was extremely good fun as we had some of the youngest competitors in the competitions.  Eastbourne A came 6th and Eastbourne B came 7th. Everybody did extremely well regardless where they came. you all deserve a good pat on the back. Also must say thanks to the support as we were the loudest that night. Once well done and hope you enjoyed it.

There are pictures on the way

South East Regional mixed pairs held at elthem on the 26th April

The competition had 9 junior teams and 12 senior teams. all the pairs that where in the competition came from around the Sussex area. Our two pairs did extremely well in what you could call a very hard competition but they did extremely well the first pair was James and Louisa who came 9th and our a secondpair was Curtis and Amy who came 4th. the two pairs who competed did really well and you should all be really proud of yourselves of what you have achieved. Well done guys.

Pictures wil be on the way soon

RLSS mixed pairs 2008

On Saturday 1 March, Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards sent a group of young members to compete in the RLSS mixed pairs at Olympos Pool in Burgess Hill.

And what a success it was! In the juniors our Amy, Curtis, Louisa and James came first and second! They ended up with the same total points so the incident position decided the final placing. Crawley came in at third place.

Crawley, Christ’s Hospital School and Worthing also competed in the seniors.

The next branch competition is the Sussex Teams (2 male and 2 female) held on the evening of 19 April at The Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne. You can find the entry forms on the Branch Website: www.rlss-sussex.co.uk

Well done everyone and thank you to our parent members for organising everything and taking the kids to Burgess Hill.

We look forward to seeing you compete again in the Sussex teams competition in April! Good luck!

An apology…. I have been a bit lazy November 20, 2007

Well it has been a while since I last posted some thing – but that doesn’t mean that nothing has been going on! Here is a quick summary rather than just avoiding writing loads of separate entries…

Firstly – a quick call to arms.. At Christmas time each year we get a chance to raise a bit of money by selling raffle tickets at the Arndale Centre. This year it will be the 9th of December from 10:30am – 4:30pm so if you can help out there is a form you can fill out at the clubhouse – or let someone know on Thursday swim night. Even if you can just be there for a couple of hours that would be great! If you not a member or would like to find out about membership that would be a good day to drop by – we will be the lot standing next to a car in the Arndale centre & hopefully a few of us will be wearing red & yellow too!

Well Victoria – I have seen your comments – well done to you, Chris, Toby and Jake on your exam last month – there are now new photo’s in the gallery. Also thanks to the examiners Danny Bryant – SLSA, Garry Cairns – EVLG, Kirk – EVLG/Brighton and Stuart – Norfolk, water saftey and not forgetting well done to Jacquie on passing her instructors. Brighton’s new club also made an appearance with Paul Abbie, Simon Crute, Anthony Biddlecombe, Harry Walker & Paul Bass passing their NaRS and Susan passing her instructors.

Beach Lifeguard competition went well – Crawley fielded two teams (with the help of Lionel filling in a little). The competition was very close – coming down to one point between Crawley A and Eastbourne – Eastbourne just won this time – but the Crawley team shows strong promise for the future – Thank you to John Stanar for organising the competition & of course to the Judges, water safety & the bodies on the day – although I think we lost Kirk due to the strong tide – last seen drifting down towards Brighton – in fact I hear that he didn’t bother coming back and is now the club captain of the newly formed Brighton Surf Life Saving Club.

Also should mention two facebook groups Eastbourne Voluntaries and Surf Lifesaving GB

SLSA GB first conference was held last month – more details on the SLSA GB website

Ok so I could have written more & I bet I have forgotten things – you can help – leave a comment or two!

What a night, it was night to remember first our rookies coming second and England going through to the final in the rugby and England 3-0 in the football. Any way the event was Worthing Town Cup and with last minutes pull outs we still able to get our rookies up there. The lads and girls who competed have done themselves proud competing against guys who so much older and beating Crawley on one of the speed events was amazing. The guys who competed where James, Alex, Holly and Lousia. All 4 competed at such a high standard on the night and all their supporters (including me) on tender hooks as they had some very close finishes. All of them should be very proud of their achievement tonight easily Holly as it was her first ever competition and also she was the youngest competitor there. So well done all of you, you have worked so hard for this and u where amazing. Thanks to all support and transport we wouldn’t of got them up there otherwise.

WELL DONE GUYS

Lionel

A big weekend just past for Eastbourne Voluntaries. We sent a team across to the west coast not really knowing what could be achieved… but with a with Gold and Bronze in the 2km Beach run and a fifth in the beach relay and good finishes in the Beach Flags EVL finished 11th in the Mens competition out of 23 clubs.

The day started in the water arena with the Surf race – That was my event… well I finished – lets not talk too much about that – only that I wish I knew before hand that all the other competitors would be wearing wetsuits! Garry was next for the Ski race – nerves gave Garry an unsteady start, but he quickly made back ground coming 14th in his heat. Fog then stopped the water events for a short while.

The Beach events began with the mens beach flags – Marcus, Rich and Jack competed in this event all making it through the first few heats, with a shaky start from Jack who had to have a run off with a fellow competitor after both grabbing the same flag. Speed was on Jacks side and he progressed to the next heat. Marcus and Rich were then beaten to the flags leaving just Jack to compete in the finals. The finals had some very Quick competitors and Jack was eliminated after the second round – but it was some very existing racing!

Back to the water arena Matt and Barry competed in the rescue tube race, by this time the tide had come in a long way and the swim was looking like a good 300m. Matt was off to a quick start and the swimming fast paced, all the competitors started to drift south with the current but unfortunately Matt corrected his course a little late… Once Matt was at the cans it was then Barry’s turn to retrieve Matt. Again Barry was quick off the beach and again the current took all the competitors south, both started back on the long swim – but the two of them could not catch the rest of the field.

Day two started on the beach with the relay. The run order was Matt, Garry, Rich then Jack – all were not really expecting much and the aim was just to have fun and not to drop the batten. Well – what a race! second in the heat! through to the finals! The only problem was that they didn’t take it easy and cruise through to the finals like the experienced teams so instead had 10 minutes to recover to try for a medal. The final was very close & the 3rd, 4th and 5th were very closely contested…. EVL missed out on the 3rd & 4th and got the 5th – but still valuable points for the team and a very exited team.

Finally the 2km run – James W and Rich (straight from the relay) were in this event. The start was quick and a large park headed off into the distance. After a 1/2 kilometer James and Rich were in the lead closely followed by a Perranporth competitor very close behind. At the 1 km mark the Perranporth competitor started to move in to second pushing Rich back to 3rd. The last km saw James stretch the lead taking Gold and the National 2km Beach run title! Rich took the bronze! What can I say a great end to a weekend!!!

It was a great competition very well run and the other clubs were great very friendly & some tremendous athletes! Looking forward to next year!!

Thanks to everyone that helped out (too many to name individually) on the Eastbourne Maritime 2km swim organised by Eastbourne Swimming club. Particularly to Frank Patterson and Lee Bailey that organised the safety cover and getting all the equipment down to the beach. Thank you to Garry Cairns and his team from the Eastbourne Beach Lifeguards that provided extra cover and made a number of rescues and assists them selves.

The weather turned out ok – the wind turned north easterly, there was a bit of a swell but no chop to the swimming conditions were good. There were 97 competitors, the majority got round fine, four people needed to be rescued – but all were fine.

After the event a few Eastbourne Voluntary members and there families stayed on the beach enjoying the increasing sunshine (that was a long time coming) – some of the member also got a chance to ride in the boat too.

Heya all just quick one to congratulate everybody who took part in the Sussex teams. We put one team in from the voluntaries which were Lionel Hartley, Jacki, Jonathon Guilford and Emelyne Brown. The competitions consisted of a march past, incident, 2 swim and tow races, 2 man relay and a rope throw. The team did extremely well coming 4th because we were up against stiff competition. Thanks to all the bodies from Eastbourne who helped out and well done once again
